1 Coordinate Systems in the Plane

Convention

When we talk about ``the point with coordinates (x,y)'' or ``the curve with equation f(x,y)'', we will always have in mind cartesian coordinates (Section 1.2). If a formula involves another type of coordinates, this will be stated explicitly.
