Try a cubic equation of the form

r = z^3 + a z^2 + b z + 1

where -0.5 < a < 0.5 and -1 < b < 0.

Another hint: using the scaling=CONSTRAINED option of the plot3d function to make sure that Maple does not scale your vase in a strange way.
