REFLECTING ON REFLECTING #1
ACTIVITY SHEET
Section III
10. Place your mirror so it is centered at the dot at the end of the
line segment.
- Rotate the mirror about its center and watch the image of the shark
'swim' around. You will need to change your position to follow the
shark's image.
- As you rotate the mirror one half time, how many "laps" does the
shark make?
- As you rotate the mirror one full time, how many "laps" does the
shark make?
- What conclusion can you make about the number of laps?
11. Place your mirror along the edge of a desk or table.
- Try tilting the mirror at various angles in order to "bend" the
edge.
- Can you make the edge of the surface appear to bend up and down,
front and back?
- At what angle to the edge must the mirror make in order for the
edge to appear to make a right angle?
- What conclusion can you make about the angle measures?
Homework:
- Draw a point A on a piece of scrap paper. Draw three points B, C, D and three lines of reflection b, c, d such that point A is the image of B reflected over b, C reflected over c, and D reflected over d.
- Encode a message that can only be read in a mirror.
