The World Wide Web (Web) was born at the Centre European Researche Nucleare (CERN), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1991. Researchers in particle physics at CERN, wanted an information access tool that would make exchange of and access to information around the world easier.
In 1992, CERN began promotion of the Web outside the confines of research and academia. It was an idea that appealed to more than the rocket scientist crowd. What made the Web attractive to CERN researchers also made it attractive to the run of the mill user--no matter what they did for a living.
Two parallel thrusts increased the Web's presence on the Internet.
By 1994, the Web had emerged as the most popular tool for Internet surfing.
