What's New in 1994:

October 21, 1994

• New version 1.5 of Geomview for X is now available via ftp. Geomview is an interactive viewer for 3-D geometric objects and can display objects in the OOGL file format. Version 1.5 has substantially improved X11 rendering code that supports, among other things, zbuffering, smooth surface shading and dithering to 1, 8 and 24 bit display depths.

  Cyberview-X version 2.0 uses this new X11 rendering engine on our server to demonstrate some of these features directly in your Web browser. (With the Netscape browser, even Mac and Windows users can take a look!)

• The Geometry Center's Interactive Gallery is now open to MS-Windows users through the Netscape browser.

September 22, 1994

• Forthcoming workshop: Systems Administration: The Mathematician's Perspective (December 15-17, 1994) will bring together mathematicians involved with computer systems administration and career systems administrators of mathematics sites.

August 25, 1994

• Orbifold Pinball is a new mathematical game in our Interactive Gallery which explores the geometry of orbifolds. It was produced as part of an undergraduate research project by Yevgeniy Dodis, a participant in the Geometry Center's 1994 Summer Institute.

• Geometry Center Postdoc Davide Cervone's multimedia research paper, A Tight Polyhedral Immersion of the Real Projective Plane with one Handle, expands the horizons of mathematical publication by using the Web to distribute animations and interactive graphics as an integral part of the exposition.

• The Geometry Center's Interactive Gallery is now open to Mac users through the MacWeb browser, versions 1.00alpha2.1 and higher.

• The Visualization and Mathematical Graphics page has been updated, including pointers to some other sites with interactive Web applications. The W3 Search Engines page has also been corrected and enhanced.

July 28, 1994

• The WebOOGL system takes the World Wide Web into 3D and beyond, thereby enabling worldwide distribution and linking of three dimensional information. WebOOGL is both a language (based on the OOGL graphics language) and a software system (based on the Center's Geomview visualization package). Try it out!

• Kali-Jot is a special version of the Kali symmetry-drawing program which supports freehand drawing of the pattern you want replicated. (For X Mosaic users only.)

June 15, 1994

• A hypertext version of the groundbreaking paper Some Planar Isospectral Domains, by Buser, Conway, Doyle, and Semmler, is now available from our Online Document Library. This paper answers the long-running question, ``Can you hear the shape of a drum?''.

• QuasiTiler version 3.0 includes an improved algorithm that is much faster, especially in higher dimensions. Now you can work in up to 13 dimensions!

May 22, 1994

• The Geometry Center Picture Archive is now accessible via the Web. The images can be retrieved in 3 different sizes to suit the speed of your network connection. Each picture has a brief description explaining how it was made, and indicating the mathematics that inspired the graphics.
