Surfaces - Gluing Diagrams And Flatlander Games

The Shape of Space Curriculum Materials

Gluing Diagrams

The purpose of the gluing diagram activity is for students to make the connection between a gluing diagram and the surface of a three dimensional object. By physically cutting out gluing diagrams and taping them together, students get a feel for properties of a disc, a cylinder, a Moebius strip, a torus, a Klein bottle, and the Projective Plane.

Flatlander Games

If students understand the notation used in gluing diagrams, they can play Tic-Tac-Toe on many surfaces. Tic-Tac-Toe is a game that many students have mastered at an early age. Two good players will always end up at a draw. But by getting rid of the boundaries, we change the game and make it interesting again!
