Standards and Portability for W3Kit
Client-Side Standards
W3Kit applications can be accessed using any HTML 2.0 or HTML 3.0 compliant WWW browser. W3Kit particularly exercises the browser's fill-out form capabilities.
- HTML 2.0.
Browsers known to work with W3Kit applications include
X Mosaic versions 2.2 and up,
MacWeb versions 1.00alpha2.1 and up,
and
Netscape for MS-Windows, Macintosh, and X, versions 0.9 and up.
See Digital's Form-Testing Home Page for the latest information on HTML 2.0 FORMs capabilities of various browsers.
- HTML 3.0 (draft).
In addition to bringing in some wonderful new FORMs capabilities (such as FILE and SCRIBBLE input), the HTML 3.0 standard is likely to slightly change current usage. However, all current usage will be retained (perhaps "deprecated")
for backwards compatibility.
Server-Side Standards
In its interactions with the HTTP server, the application script communicates in accordance with the Common Gateway Interface standard for server extensions:
In order to compile and run, W3Kit applications require a UNIX environment with reasonable multimedia support. Specifically, W3Kit makes use of:
- Display PostScript or X11 for 2D graphics. DPS (the prefferred option) is supported on many UNIX platforms, including Solaris 2, Irix 4 and 5, and NeXTSTEP.
- MinneGraphics (from the Geometry Center) for 3D graphics. MG has been ported to most well-known UNIX platforms, and can take advantage of special 3D capabilities such as IrisGL and Quick RenderMan when present.
- Objective-C
for powerful object-oriented extensions to ANSI C. Objective-C is supported by GCC on most UNIX platforms (see the INSTALL file that comes with GCC for exceptions).
W3Kit has been tested under Irix 4.0.x and 5.2, NeXTSTEP 3.1, SunOS 4.1.x (3D graphics only), and Solaris 2.3.
