Dick has been a participant in Center activities since its inception
in 1991. He led a project on visualization of invariant sets in
four dimensions during the academic year 1991-92, and he organized
a workshop on invariant sets for symplectic maps in 1992. In May 1993
he was appointed to the Center faculty. He became Interim Director
in February 1994 and was appointed Director in June 1994. As Director,
he is responsible for the overall management of Center activities and
for implementing and maintaining the supervisory, budgetary, and
accounting systems necessary for the Center to carry out its mission
and its programs. He works with the Board of Governors to set the
scientific, technological, and educational directions for the Center.
Background
Dick has been at the University of Minnesota since 1970, when he joined
the School of Mathematics as an assistant professor. He worked his way
through the ranks, eventually becoming a professor in 1979. He served
as department head from 1986 to 1990. His research area is dynamical
systems, with particular emphasis on classical mechanics. He has held
visiting positions at the Courant Institute, the University of Wisconsin,
the Swiss Federal Polytechnical Institute, the Mittag-Leffler Institute,
the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro, the
Unversity of Colorado, and the University of Paris. He has been active
in health care issues, serving as Chair of the University Senate
Health Plan Subcommittee.
