Activities at the Geometry Center
Lori is interested in what the Geometry Center can do for education.
During the 1995 Summer Institute, she was a technical assistant to the
teacher-student teams developing curriculum materials at the Center.
Lori has designed a set of
worksheets
for
Kali,
a software program for exploring symmetry groups,
that are used during Geometry Center tours. She also leads portions of
these tours.
Lori enjoyed working as an animator for the Geometry Center's latest
large-scale video,
The Shape of Space.
In field testing the video, she found that when ideas of topology are presented
using computer graphics, they are accessible even at the sixth grade level,
though topology is typically not introduced until graduate school or late
undergraduate school.
Background
After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the
University of Wisconsin,
Madison, in 1991, Lori was a software engineer for
Vista Technologies
where she developed software for electronic hardware design, with emphasis
on user interfaces.
Since then, Lori has changed the focus of her career to education.
At the Geometry Center, she has a unique opportunity to apply her software
engineering background to projects that can make waves in the field of
education. As an employee of the University, Lori takes advantage of the
Regents' Scholarship to work toward earning a teaching license for
mathematics through the
College
of Education and Human Development.
