Tools for Preparing Web Documents

The main tools for preparing web document is an editor and a browser. However, there are a number of other tools which you may find useful, especially for working with images.

HTML editors

WebWriter -- WebWriter.app is an HTML editor for the next. It is a NeXT application, and it can be found in /LocalApps. The HTML 2.0 tags and character codes are available via menus, for those who prefer not to remember them.
html-helper-mode -- for the emacs fanatic, html-helper-mode has lots of nice features including tag completion and color coding. Get it from the author, Nelson Minar.

Pre-Invented Wheels

Document Builder -- This is an interactive web application developed at the Geometry Center for creating skeleton web documents. Among other things, the Document Builder will create navigation buttons for you.

WWW Icon Collections -- a vast repository of public domain icons suitable for spicing up web pages.

Including Mathematics

latex2html -- Latex2html automatically converts latex files to HTML files. It does a reasonable job, provided the source file is not two complicated. For detailed information about latex2html, consult the author's online documentation, or the printed manual in the Geometry Center library.
Doing it by hand -- The perfectionist will probably end up producing the necessary image files by hand. The relevant image tools are tex, xdvi, xv and img2gif. The procedure is
1. Produce the expression with TeX
2. Display it on the screen with xdvi or ghostview or an equivalent
3. Grab the image with xv or an equivalent, process the image if necessary and save it as a gif file.
4. Make the background transparent using img2gif
5. Include it in your document.
