REFLECTING WITH ONE MIRROR & DIHEDRAL SYMMETRY
ACTIVITY SHEET
For more information regarding this activity and its objectives, see the
accompanying Teacher's Guide.
Section I
1. Place the edge of your mirror near points P and Q below so the
points are both reflected in the mirror.
- Making sure your mirror is perpendicular to the paper, carefully
draw the image where it appears on the paper.
- Mark a straight line along the edge of the mirror so that when you
remove the mirror you will see where the line of reflection was.

- Repeat this process for the following figures:
2. Without using your mirror, sketch where the images of of the
following figures would appear if reflected across the given mirror
lines.
- Now place a mirror along each of the lines of reflection in the
figures above to check how well your drawings match up with the images.
- Make any corrections in your drawings.
3. Given a point and a mirror line, describe where the image of that
point would be located.
4. Discuss with your group the relationship between the figures, the
mirror lines, and their images. Summarize your conclusions.
5. Draw several straight lines on a clean sheet of paper.
- Place a small interesting object on the paper such as a coin or
pencil.
- Using your lines as mirror lines, sketch the images of the objects.
- Use a mirror placed on each line to check your images.
