SYMMETRY ALL AROUND US
ACTIVITY SHEET
For each of the following pictures, examine the photo carefully and
respond to the corresponding questions.

9. Draw the lines of reflection with respect to the sewer grate itself.
If the sewer grate had no slots, how many lines of reflection would it
have?
- List some possible explanations why sewer grates and manhole covers
are round and not square or some other common shape.

10. Draw all lines of reflection with respect to the stone donut without
the stand.
- Why was it difficult to display all the lines of reflection?
- What polygon can you name and sketch that has the most lines of
reflection?
- In what ways is this polygon similar to the stone donut?
- Provide some possible uses for this large stone donut.
HOMEWORK
Look around the room, the school, your house, anywhere, and make
some generalizations about the symmetry in the shapes you see.
The following are some ideas to get you started:
- Are they hard to find?
- Do they have any lines of reflection?
- How do they fit together?
- Given a shape, is it more likely to have reflective symmetry or not?
