SYMMETRY ALL AROUND US
ACTIVITY SHEET
For more information regarding this activity and its objectives, see the
accompanying Teacher's Guide.
For each of the following pictures, examine the photo carefully and
respond to the corresponding questions.
1. Ignoring the reflections in the windows, use a colored marker to show
where this photo could be folded so that the two halves match.
From now on we will refer to this fold as the line of
reflection. You have just sketched the line of reflection with
respect to the entire photo.
- What shape is repeated to create this window? Sketch this basic
shape and show its lines of reflection.
- Compare the lines of reflection with respect to the entire photo to
the lines of reflection of the basic shape.

2. Use your colored marker to draw the line(s) of reflection with respect
to the entire photo. Again ignore the small irregularities.
- What simple shape is repeated to make this window? Sketch it and
show its lines of reflection.
- Explain how the lines of reflection with respect to the entire photo
would be different if the center rectangle was filled with squares instead.
