• I have led a number of faculty development workshops for Jerry, as part of the Interactive Math Text Workshops, but those were all on-site activities.
• I have led an earlier incarnation of this very workshop, when Robert Miner and I hosted an on-site version of it at the Geometry Center last summer.
• I have been using Internet technologies in undergraduate and graduate level courses for over a decade (mostly at Carnegie Mellon, but also at the U of Minnesota and elsewhere), and I've been using a wide range of Web-specific tools for a good four years (in both educational and commercial settings). But those were always in support of on-site courses.
• I have done a lot of work in establishing and running classes that have involved collaborative learning and some that have involved writing across the curriculum but, again, those always involved some actual in-person class meetings.

In other words, what I'm trying to say is that I am somewhat of a novice myself at true "distance education." But, in thinking about this course, I decided that a course on the Web that was primarily about the Web would be as good a place as any to jump into that realm. Some of you may have more experience than I in running a completely-remote course, If so, I welcome your suggestions, and I'll do my best to incorporate the best ones.
