Math and Society
The mathematical community has a golden opportunity to provide
intellectual leadership as new electronic scholarly culture
emerges:
- Mathematical ideas have always challenged linear systems of
representation, and pushed innovation in communication technology.
- Mathematics has a long tradition of using abstraction to make
information information widely applicable.
- The mathematical community has an obligation to the
scientific community.
- Research areas like dynamical systems and wavelets rely heavily on
computer methods and graphical visualization.
- The print journal system has become economically unsustainable.
Both library budgets, and the availablity of relevant research
publications are diminishing.
