Cellular Automata and the Pentominoes
The rules for cell growth are as follows:
- All cells have an initial state of 0 (dead) or 1
(alive).
- The next state of a cell is determined by (the
cell's
state + the cell above's state + the cell below's state + the cell to
the
left's state + the cell to the right's state) Mod 2.
- Cells of state 1 are colored. Cells of state 0 are
blank.
Growth movies will show each step of the
evolution. Displaying
only the current state at each stage.
History movies save each step and display them all,
stacked
along a third axis. This axis represents time. The movie rotates and
zooms
into the built up history from change 1 to change 20.

Now the rules change.
The rules for cell growth are as follows:
- All cells have an initial state of 0 (dead) or 1
(alive).
- If the current state is 1, it will remain 1.
- If the current state is 0, it will change to a 1 if
exactly one of its neighbors is alive.
- Cells of state 1 are colored. Cells of state 0 are
blank.
