But to use your mail, you need to log in first. Your mailing address on the Internet (the second column) also tells you the information on what to do to log in, at least from here at the Geometry Center. (We'll cover logging in from home later.) There are two parts to your address: the account name, which is to the left of the @ sign, and the machine you need to connect to in order to use your account, which is found to the right of the @ sign. So, to log in, type "telnet", followed by the name of the machine, as in this example:
telnet gold.tc.umn.edu
into the blue window. (It won't work if you are still using IRC, so you may need to quit that by typing /quit first.)
It should ask you for a login name, and at this point, type in your account name. For example, it may look like this:
Trying 128.101.116.12... Connected to gold.tc.umn.edu. Escape character is '^]'. SunOS UNIX (gold) login: mack0045It will then ask for your password. If you don't know your password, try using your social security number. If that doesn't work, try your student id number. If that doesn't work, you'll need to find out your password, and one place to start would be to ask your teacher to send mail to help@tc.umn.edu :-)
Once you get in you should see a menu that will allow you to access your e-mail.
