Optical Art Designs: Student Lesson 5

Creating an Illusion

Objective:

Students will create an image of illusion.

Level and Topics covered

  • Geometry
  • Art
  • Computer Technology

Description

Students will reproduce these images using the instructions below.

Materials

  • Kali software, disk, electronic folder for storage, The View image

Instructions

Select Rosette under Pallette and click on the #1(?) button.

To reproduce the image in the first frame, start in the upper left-hand corner of the screen:

  1. Make a diagonal. (Click & drag the cursor from the UL corner to the LR corner, and dbl click.)

  2. Select a point on the diagonal (near the UL side) click and drag cursor to form a horizontal line on the RT side of the screen; click & drag the cursor to another point on the diagonal (approx. a 45 degree angle will be formed) and dbl click.

  3. Repeat step 2, making the second horizontal line above the first one and creating an angle that is approx. 46 or 47 degrees.

To reproduce the image in the second frame, start in the upper left-hand corner of the screen:

  1. Create many lines from the UL to the bottom of the screen, along the original diagonal line. Make sure that the lines start out closer in the UL corner and eventually are spread out near the bottom of the screen. (creating a perspective point that is not present on the screen..."infinte look".)

  2. Begin filling in the triangular figure in the top of the screen by traveling along the inner horizontal line, clicking at the corner, and ending at the original diagonal line, then dbl clicking.

  3. Complete the figure by drawing horizontal lines (approx. 3). (Remember to dbl click at the end!!!)

  4. Save your image, print it and compare it to a neighbors' (if applicable). Reflect on what you learned through this experience. How might this experience help in the process of creating other illusionary drawings?

For further exploration:

1. Complete the screen with your own illusion:

Try to fill the screen with what might be considered a 2-pt perspective or illusional image. You are off to a great start. Think about the procedures used to create the first two frames.

2. Alter your image:

Try using the smoothing feature under the OPTIONS menu. What happened? Was it what you expected? What might you do to alter this image further?
