Objective

To become familiar with symmetry in op art.

Topics covered

  • Geometry
  • Art
  • Computer Technology

Description

In pairs, students will look at examples of optical art and identify the symmetry involved.

Materials

  • Slides or a Slide Show with captions of op art
  • Study guide either an HTML document or hard copy
  • Disk for storage
  • Electronic folder for storage

Examples

These are original images. Created by LaToniya Jones-McKinnon, 1996.

Teacher Responsibilities

  1. Present examples of images that represent 1-2 symmetry groups.
  2. Give an example of the intended outcome.

Student Responsibilities

  1. Study the works presented. Look at the features of the work and its relation to symmetry groups.
  2. Label and describe the symmetry identified in the work, if possible.
  3. Save responses on disk and in the folder designated for your class.

Assessment

A sample rubric for assessing this assignment follows:
  • Assignment completed on time. (2 points)
  • Assignment saved in the appropriate locations. (3 points...1.5 points for each location assigned.)
