The Pythagorean Theorem

What you have discovered on your own was known to the Egyptians and Babylonians over 4000 years ago!

The sum of the squares of the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse.

In algebraic form, we write this as

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

This relationship is known as the Pythagorean Theorem.

Caution! This relationship only holds for right triangles.
