Classification of Patterns -
Prerequisities and Supplies
While this unit was designed to be used with the Web, it is also a stand alone unit. Access to the Web is desirable, but not necessary. If this unit is used without the Web, you will simply need to find additional pictures for the students to classify after they have learned planar symmetry.
The students will need to know definitions of the following terms in order to complete this lesson:
- point
- line
- plane and planar
It would be helpful to have the following supplies and/or equipment:
- a color printer or wall paper samples from your local wallpaper store. Some types of gift wrap could also be used.
- colored pencils or pens to mark the basic pattern (pre-preimage or motif) of a transformation
- ruler
- mirror or Mira
- scissors to cut a piece of the pattern to try out different transformations
- temporary adhesive like Post-It Glue to place original patterns in different positions depending on their classification
- poster board or butcher paper to display individual groups' classification systems
