Dear M. --- :

It gives me great pleasure to offer you the position of Temporary Assistant Professor (without tenure) in the School of Mathematics for the academic years 1997-98 and 1998-99. This is a date specific appointment, and as such it is not a tenure track appointment not can it be converted into a probationary appointment leading to indefinite tenure. It is contingent on the completion of your Ph.D. degree by September 1, 1997. You may, of course, apply for a tenure track position, which is a separate search, at any time during the term of your appointment.

The term of your initial appointment is September 1, 1997 to June 15, 1998 and September 1, 1998 to June 15, 1999. It is renewable for another 2-year period. Your salary will be $35,409 for the period September 1, 1997 through June 15, 1998, with an academic year base (September 16, 1997-June 15, 1998) salary of $33,545.

We can also offer you a summer 1998 optional appointment for the 1.5 month period June 16, 1998-July 31, 1998, with a salary of $41,000 for the entire 11 month period, September 1, 1997-July 31, 1998.

Your duties will include teaching in the calculus component of UMTYMP and other departmental courses and working with the Director of the Special Projects Office on curriculum development projects (K-12, undergraduate, and graduate), as well as other programs and activities.

In addition you will collaborate with the Director in research on the program and activities, leading to the publication of articles and materials, and participate in the educational and scientific activities of the School. The optional supplemental income will involve working on external grants awarded to the Special Projects Office.

Although this offer is subject to approval by the Board of Regents, the critical paperwork has been cleared through central administration and I anticipate no difficulty. If you accept the position as described above, indicate your response below and return a copy of this letter to me. I hope that you will be able to accept this position and that you will let me know your decision by ---. If you have any questions, please contact Harvey Keynes at 612-625-2861 or me at 612-625-5591.

Sincerely,

Naresh Jain
Department Head
