Feel free to use whatever you want from that e-mail message,
including my name. The classes I am taking this semester have only
served to reinforce my thoughts about last semester's math 112 class.
I don't know how much influence I could possibly have, but if there is
anything else I can do to help further your reform efforts and your
job search, don't hesitate to ask me. I am more than willing. I
still believe that that class possessed all the qualities of a great
class: a teacher truly committed to his/her students(i.e. an
unbelievable willingness to meet with confused students at any hour),
projects that creatively helped reinforce topics to students along
with the traditional hmwk assignments, and a class size that made
students feel like something other than just one of the masses (an
experience that has yet to be matched in any of my other classes here
at Cornell).
In fact, this lack of personal attention and the other qualities
that existed in 112 but not my other classes helped to influence a decision
of mine. Next semester I am transferring to Harvard, the school that I had
wanted to attend out of high school. Initially, I was unsure whether or not
to apply for transfer last semester for many reasons, but my dissatisfaction
with the learning atmosphere in my other classes helped me to make my
decision to apply. Fortunately for me things worked out and I was accepted.
Of course I would be lieing if I said that the lack of more reformed Math
112-like classes at Cornell was the sole reason for my decision, but it
certainly was a big consideration. Again, if you could use my help in any
way to pursue your reform efforts or job search, please feel free to e-mail
again or call me (253-2207). Students will benefit greatly if your efforts
are successful. Good luck, Hubert.
