I am pleased to offer you an appointment as Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics for a two-year term beginning September 1, 1997, and ending August 31, 1999. This appointment is not renewable and will terminate on August 31, 1999.

Your initial salary rate for nine months is $35,000. Payment is made in twelve monthly installments beginning September 25, 1997.

At Duke, teaching assignments are determined by department chairs. John Harer, Chair of the Department of Mathematics, has asked me to inform you that you will be assigned a teaching load of two courses per semester during your term here.

John Harer has also asked me to inform you that he will make available to you from departmental funds, if you wish, summer support to work on curricular issues. He will offer up to 1.5 months of support at your current rate during the summer of 1998, up to a maximum of $5,830.

We will provide up to $2,500 with which you may meet your computing needs. Please have your departmental staff work with Assistant Dean Melissa Mills to arrange for the use of these funds.

Following the standard allowances for Arts & Sciences, we will provide you with $500 to assist you in your relocation to Durham. Once we have reimbursed you or your mover (a detailed letter about these procedures will follow your acceptance of this offer), we will pay you any unused portion of this sum as taxable income.

I request you fill out Section 1 of the enclosed Form I-9 and return it to this office with your signed appointment letter. You must do this to comply with federal regulations. By law you cannot be paid, even retroactively, for any work done before Section 2 of this Employment eligibility Verification Form has been filled out. To insure this is done, visit your department office no later than three days after your appointment begins. You may go by before your appointment begins. Take with you the require documents (described on the form's verso), and departmental staff will complete Section 2 with you. If you have any questions about this process, please call your new department's office.

To help inform you about many of the aspect of life in Durham, I am sending you under separate cover a packet of material that is a guide to the city and surrounding areas. I will also enclose a Faculty Benefits Guide.

We look forward with pleasure to the prospect that you will join us at Duke. Please indicate your acceptance of this offer by signing the enclosed copy of this letter and returning it to me no later than March 26, 1997.

Sincerely,

William H. Chafe
