Although the other elements are very important to any discussion
of an extension language for VRML, I would like to argue
that any appropriate language or class library should incorporate
time-criticality at a fairly low level. The level-of-detail
node is an important first step, but it would also be
appropriate to add methods which are aware of how much time
they have available to execute, and choose the appropriate
rendering or computation technique.
This will become more important with complex scenes, especially
those involving scientific visualizations and realtime
collaboration.
