This sounds like it is functionally equivalent to
helper applications -- specified through .mailcap on Unix,
or in each Browser's Preferences menu on Mac/Windows.
As an intermediate measure for Mac/Windows,
it's fine (e.g. RealAudio, ScriptX). For Unix, it's
an untenable position.
